Cal Poly Design 3On Monday, June 6, over 30 members of the community gathered at the Pilot City offices at 101 Estudillo to view students’ ideas for redevelopment of the Town Hall Square site at the northwest corner of East 14th and Davis Streets.  As the conclusion of a six-week design charrette, architectural students from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo presented their proposals for potential design and use scenarios at the site.

Cal Poly Design 2The largely vacant, 1.2 acre Town Hall Square site lies in the heart of Downtown San Leandro.  Portions of the site are city-owned and will be offered for sale and redevelopment through a Request for Proposals (RFP) in the coming year.  The City’s goal for the site is a development that creates a sense of arrival to downtown, incorporates mixed uses that serve residents, and includes pedestrian connections to the building and San Leandro Creek to the north.

Cal Poly Design 4Led by Professor Thomas Jones, the three students, Remy Canto Adams, Eduardo Tovar and Simon Van Hees, received feedback from a panel of professionals including Mayor Pauline Russo Cutter, Chief Innovation Officer Deborah Acosta, Principal Planner Sally Barros, Gina Chavez of RRM Design Group, and Winston Win of Lowney Architecture.  The students’ proposals focused on innovation and sustainability, including next generation architectural design, community space, public art, and sustainable building practices.

“The City of San Leandro is excited to see the students’ proposals for the Town Hall Square site,” said Katie Bowman, Business Development Specialist with the City of San Leandro. “Their use and design ideas, as well as the community feedback gathered, provide insight for future redevelopment of the site.”

Furthermore, Thomas Jones, Cal Poly professor and former Dean of the College of Architecture & Environmental Design added, “This project provides a rare chance for our students to become directly engaged with community representatives in creating visions for the heart of San Leandro.”
