With National Small Business Week next week (April 30-May 6), the City of San Leandro would like to highlight how important small businesses and entrepreneurs are to the local community. Small Business Week is an opportunity for San Leandro to salute the diverse business owners, entrepreneurs and employees for all they do to shape our local economy. We encourage all residents to join in celebrating the ingenuity of San Leandro’s small business owners and continue to support the development of new small businesses in our community by shopping local. When you shop local you not only enjoy a more distinctive and personal experience, but each dollar you spend at independent businesses returns 3 times more money to San Leandro’s local economy than one spent at a chain.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, more than half of Americans either own or work for a small business with small businesses creating two out of every three new jobs in the United States. Small businesses are the engine of San Leandro’s economy.  Small businesses employing 50 or fewer people make up 90% of businesses in San Leandro and nationwide make up 99.7% of U.S. employer firms. In keeping with the City’s diverse population, San Leandro businesses are owned by people with a wide range of races and ethnicities.  Around 64% of businesses are minority owned, as compared to 41% in the Bay Area overall.

Local small businesses are encouraged to take advantage of the many free resources available next week and throughout the year.  The U.S. Small Business Administration is hosting a series of different events aimed at small businesses throughout the week. There are also a number of other organizations, communities and businesses hosting their own National Small Business Week 2017.

The San Leandro Chamber of Commerce is also committed to helping small business owners and entrepreneurs succeed by establishing and implementing initiatives that support the growth and success of San Leandro’s small business community, such as the Entrepreneurs Business Forum. For more information about local business organizations, resources, and incentives please visit San Leandro’s Economic Development Website.
