For years, Indian food has been the most cited need in the San Leandro restaurant scene and Taste of the Himalayas is a most welcome addition to town.

CreAsian Bistro at 1269 MacArthur Boulevard was recently purchased by new owners and is being rebranded as “CreAsian – Taste of the Himalayas.”  The new owners will introduce Nepalese and Indian recipes, while continuing to serve many of the popular dishes on the existing CreAsian menu.

This is the second Taste of the Himalayas location. The first, in the heart of the Gourmet Ghetto in Berkeley has been operating since 2005 with rave reviews and a loyal  fan base.

I’m so sorry that CreAsian is closing. I felt very strongly that it was a unique dining experience and I treasured it dearly. I am not aware of Taste of the Himalayas but can only hope they simply ADD to CreAsian’s menu rather than keeping just the “popular” CreAsian dishes.

CreAsian’s main problem is that it did not update its menu. The food was good, but it was the same. Restaurants at its price-point need to offer some variety.

Taste of the Himalayas is a somewhat cheaper restaurant that has had a winning formula in Berkeley. It’s, of course, an open question whether it will work just as well in San Leandro – but I’m not sure that hybridizing themselves with CreAsian’s baggage will help that.

Perhaps, Marga, but I was happy with the same food each time. THAT’s the food I’ll miss. 🙁
