On the same day the City announced gourmet food trucks will commence service on Tuesday nights in downtown San Leandro, Mayor Stephen Cassidy and the City Council unanimously approved a privately-financed $10 million development that will help re-energize the core of San Leandro’s downtown.  Now called the Village, a shopping center will be constructed on the 1.7 acre parking lot at 1550 East 14th Street. Three buildings, housing a new CVS pharmacy, Peet’s Coffee, The Habit Burger, and up to two other commercial tenants, combined with a public plaza offering free public WiFi, will form the Village.

In addition to the five new commercial tenants, the approved project includes a plaza offering outdoor dining, a fountain, two art display panels, granite seat benches, decorative lighting with hanging flower baskets, art-inspired bike racks, and decorative paving. High-quality architectural design elements will be incorporated in the exterior of the Village as well. These elements include stone work, arbors and trellises, and new sidewalks. Trees planted along East 14th Street and decorative grates along street frontages also will add to the attractiveness of the Village.

This project will spur interest in the downtown area, furthered by the closing of the CVS currently located at Callan and Davis Streets. CVS has confirmed an interest in participating in a joint sale of that property with the City (the City owns the parking lot), which would allow for a new private development at the 1.5 acre site, consistent with San Leandro’s Transit Oriented Development Strategy. CVS also provided notice to the City that they do not plan to exercise their right to a 10-year lease extension with Safeway for the CVS location in Washington Plaza when it expires in 2017, contingent upon Safeway making a significant investment in redeveloping their store.

Plans and renderings of the new project are presented below:

Patricia, Chipotle will open across the street from the Village, at the corner of East 14th and Juana, by the end of the year. We will look into Mimi’s and see if they are a match for any of our available properties. We are always on the lookout for restaurant options. Thanks

Flax Art & Design is looking for a new home. Priced out of San Francisco, maybe they could take a space in the Village. They need 20,000sf of retail space.

There isn’t nearly that much space available at The Village, but we might have some other options in town. Thanks for the lead – we will definitely reach out to them!
