Residents of San Leandro’s Estudillo Estates neighborhood have long been anticipating the opening of a new restaurant at 599 Dutton Avenue on the corner of Dutton and Bancroft Avenue. The wait is over! After keeping the neighborhood on the edge of their seats during interior and exterior renovations, Moussaka Mediterranean Kitchen has begun with its ‘soft opening’ for friends and family and will officially open its doors on Wednesday, December 6, 2017. The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner, seven days a week, from 11am – 3pm and 5pm – 10pm.

Moussaka promises a fine dining experience on a casual dining budget. Chef Nilgun Boyar has nearly forty years experience in the business since receiving her culinary degree in Switzerland in 1979. She has previously served as sous chef at Michelin-rated Quince Restaurant in San Francisco.  With her Greek and Turkish ancestry, she has created a menu drawing from both of her native cuisines in addition to select dishes from Lebanon, Italy, and Morocco. Some signature dishes include a selection of döner, kebab, and tagine dishes, as well as the namesake moussaka, which will be available either with lamb or vegetarian. Other interesting and tempting dishes are the Mantı – a Turkish ravioli, duck bacon sliders, and the grilled whole branzino with braised horta. The menu will accommodate vegan and gluten-free diets and includes a kids menu as well.

Those who like to round off a meal with something sweet will be pleased with the dessert menu, which includes rizogalo, traditional Turkish künefe, and a Turkish coffee panna cotta.  A modest but unique wine list will deliver carefully selected, rare wines while a selection of beers will also be available.

The owners of Moussaka have made a significant investment in the interior, which has undergone a complete renovation and invites diners with a feeling of elegance, comfort, and welcome. The exterior has also undergone noticeable changes, most prominently the removal of the green awnings which previously covered one third of the large windows.  Diners are welcome to stop by to enjoy a great meal and a glass of wine at this most recent addition to San Leandro’s steadily expanding list of new restaurants.

I would say the entire North area has been looking forward to the opening, not just Estudillo Estates. There’s The Broadmoor, Bay-O-Vista, Creekside, Farrelly Pond and Best Manor to name a few. Congrats to the entire North area and San Leandro!
