The East Bay Economic Development Alliance has announced finalists for the 2019 East Bay Innovation Awards – and once again, the City of San Leandro is represented proudly by one of our innovative businesses!

This year, Prime Roots, formerly known as Terramino Foods, has been nominated in the category of Food for its plant-based salmon burger.  Prime Roots uses food science and biotechnology to transform fungi into meat and seafood alternative products that have similar nutrition and taste to animal based products. The goal is to provide an alternative to conventional farming practices, while providing customers with the finest protein from ancient fungi.

Co-Founders Kimberlie Le and Joshua Nixon developed Prime Roots’s prototype at the Alternative Meats Lab at UC Berkeley’s Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology.  This summer, Prime Roots moved to the creative workspace above the Westgate Shopping Center, known as the Gate510, where they have been able to grow next to other bio-tech businesses, such as Geltor.

Prime Roots’s first product is a plant-based salmon burger that not only looks, smells and tastes like salmon, but also has omega-3 fatty acids and is high in digestible protein. The plant-based salmon burger is made with an innovative process using koji, which is used to make ingredients such as miso and sake.  Prime Roots was recently featured in Forbes and Business Insider while operating under their former name, Terramino.

On July 24, 2018 Prime Roots announced a $4.25 million seed funding round co-led by True Ventures and Collaborative Fund. Prime Roots has used the funds to expand its team and continue to develop sustainable protein products.

Congratulations to the staff of Prime Roots for the nomination and its mission to innovate food!
