More about the Bay Area Urban Manufacturing Initiative (BAUM)

San Leandro is pleased to be one of the 30 partner cities of BAUM, a project to facilitate the creation of a well-defined and interconnected regional manufacturing ecosystem. With our position at the epicenter of technology, design, and innovation, the Bay Area has the potential to shape the future of manufacturing. San Leandro is committed to working with its neighboring cities to ensure that the region seizes this opportunity to retain and create middle-class jobs for a more equitable Bay Area.

San Leandro has a long industrial history, first in making plows and Caterpillar tractors, then in canning, and then in Chrysler vehicles. This has created a legacy of skills in metals and machining, food processing and distribution, and instruments and process controls. This is precisely why San Leandro continues to preserve around 25% of its land for industrial use, as the industrial/manufacturing sector continues to contribute significantly to San Leandro’s economy ($52 million 2014-2017).
