In February 2016, we announced the City of San Leandro’s participation in the 2016 San Francisco Regional Startup’s in Residence Program.  At that time, the City identified two specific City challenges and an invitation to tech startups to identify other opportunities:

  • The IT Department seeks an easy-to-use software tool to standardize and simplify the department’s budgeting and performance monitoring.
  • The Recreation & Human Services Department is in need of a user ID card and related software application that creates an easy-to-understand visual analysis of user service and program statistics for RHS supervisors and project managers.
  • The City also welcomes the opportunity to consider technology-based solutions to local challenges not identified in the 2016 STiR program guidelines.

After vetting a number of applicants by all of the participating cities (San Francisco, San Leandro, Oakland and West Sacramento), on April 19th the names of the selected startups were announced at a special event at Runway in San Francisco.  We are now mid-way through the program, which will end in September at a San Francisco Showcase event to demonstrate the new technologies created through this year’s program.

Here’s where we are today:

PrintSelected by the IT Dept., Christopher Brown and his partner Nate Vaziri are developing a software solution that will enable IT to more effectively and fairly allocate the cost of technology and communications among the various City departments.

lotadata_owler_20160302_212248_originalWorking with our Recreation staff, this large team headed by CEO Apu Kumar is developing a San Leandro Recreation application that will connect the user to Recreation services offered at the City’s Marina and Senior Community Centers via her/his smart device: find and register for programs and classes, provide online evaluations, connect to a variety of activities happening throughout San Leandro.  The aggregated data collected from the user interactions will enable staff to fine-tune programming and services to better meet the needs and desires of a broader spectrum of the community.

syncfab_logo_estHeaded by CEO Jeremy Goodwin, this manufacturing-focused team is co-located with Type A Machines at The Gate.  SyncFab responded to our invitation to create a City challenge, which City staff and the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce happily accepted.
The Challenge?  Develop a web-based platform that connects hardware entrepreneurs, designers and others looking to manufacture a prototype or product with factories that have excess capacity and the willingness to work with hardware startups.  The opportunity for our manufacturing plants is for new business; the opportunity for startups is to partner with a local factory to prototype hardware products locally, as well as the potential for partnerships.  The San Leandro Chamber of Commerce has been key in connecting the SyncFab team to San Leandro manufacturers willing to host tours of hardware entrepreneurs.  Scandic, Halus Power Systems, and Kennerly Spratling Manufacturing Group have hosted tours this summer.  To view blog and video of the Scandic tour, click here.  You can also view a blog and video of SyncFab’s MIT tour of Twist Bioscience in SF’s Mission Bay here.  We will post blog/videos for the other San Leandro tours in a subsequent post.

If you are a hardware entrepreneur and interested in joining future tours, please RSVP via the provided links:

  1. Koffler Electric on July 26th: RSVP HERE
  2. Applied Fusion on August 4th: This tour is limited to a maximum of 5 people.  APPLY HERE

And the good news for SyncFab’s project keeps rolling in.  On June 20th, President Obama announced the winner of the New Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute competition.  To be located in Los Angeles, the Institute will advance U.S. manufacturing competitiveness in a variety of areas — and San Leandro’s OSIsoft and SyncFab were both named as industry partners to this initiative!

San Leandro is fast becoming a destination for entrepreneurs and startups, whether they are focused in hardware, software, big data, internet of things — supported by a unique fiber optic infrastructure called Lit San Leandro.

Mobile technology has also revolutionized the way we shop. With the rise of e-commerce, mobile devices have become powerful tools for online shopping. We can browse through a vast catalog of products, read reviews, and make purchases with just a few taps on our screens. Mobile payment systems have made transactions quick and secure, further enhancing the convenience of online shopping.
