Last week, the East Bay Express published its annual Best of the East Bay issue, which features an extensive array of its writers’ favorite East Bay establishments across a number of categories. The categories are: Food & Drink, Shops & Services, Nightlife & Entertainment, Arts & Music, and Cannabis.

Three San Leandro businesses top the lists in the Food & Drink category. Sweethoney Dessert (1423 E. 14th Street) receives mouthwatering accolades as the paper’s favorite spot for Hong Kong-style desserts.  Along with commending Sweethoney Dessert for its delicacies, East Bay Express also applauds its atmosphere as a popular hangout in its ideal location in Downtown San Leandro.

Drake’s Brewing Company (1933 Davis Street) claims the top spot in two subcategories.  While the East Bay Express does not condone drinking in public (which is prohibited in California), it has awarded Drake’s the title Best Local Beer to Drink Out of a Paper Bag with its Denogginizer.  The double IPA is sold in single 22 oz bottles as well as regular six-packs and packs 90 IBUs and a whopping 9.75 percent alcohol by volume. Drake’s also earned the title of Best Brewery, which is no small feat considering there is ample competition in the East Bay.

A Best Off-the-Beaten-Path Scoop Shop designation was awarded to Clancy’s Ice Cream Parlour (1234 Manor Boulevard). With 38 flavors, ranging from the common varieties to exotic tastes like purple yam and macapuno, the inconspicuous Washington Manor neighborhood shop is known for its generous scoops at an affordable price.

We sincerely congratulate these San Leandro businesses on these honors.
