This year, on national Manufacturing Day, the East Bay Economic Development Alliance, released the 2019 East Bay Manufacturing Profile.  This special report evaluates regional trends, leading sub-sectors, and takes a look at the future of manufacturing.

The East Bay has a long legacy of manufacturing that continues to this day–ranging from the manufacturing of machinery, to medical equipment, to food. The manufacturing sector remains a vital source of innovation and economic competitiveness in the East Bay, with significant contributions to research and development, exports, and productivity growth.

The East Bay has seen its concentration in manufacturing jobs increase relative to the U.S., California, and the rest of the Bay Area since the mid-1990s. This is particularly true for specialized and advanced manufacturers that support the region’s high-tech sectors.

The East Bay had 102,500 manufacturing jobs in 2018, a 27% growth in manufacturing jobs since 2013, and a $224 billion Gross Regional Product (GRP) in 2018. Manufacturing represents 15% of the East Bay’s overall GRP. In San Leandro, there are over 160 manufacturers, employing 4,877 workers at an average annual wage of $64,025.

October 4 was National Manufacturing Day – a nationwide campaign to celebrate the maker industry by engaging communities across the U.S. For the second consecutive year, the City of San Leandro partnered with Bay Area Urban Manufacturing (BAUM) to organize the day’s events in San Leandro. Urban Bloc was chosen as this year’s champion and served as a face of the San Leandro campaign, and hosted public tours on the day, along with other local manufacturers Scandic, FreeWire, and Mr. Plastics.

That evening, an industry meet-up was sponsored by the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce and the City of San Leandro, and hosted by Drake’s Brewing Company, inviting all San Leandro manufacturers to socialize and celebrate the San Leandro maker community together.

For the fifth time, on Thursday, October 24, the Chamber of Commerce, Chabot College, Eden Area ROP, and local school districts collaborated on East Bay Manufacturing Day, a full day of maker excitement for high school students from San Leandro Unified, San Lorenzo Unified, Hayward Unified, and Castro Valley Unified school districts. The event is arranged in an effort to introduce students to the manufacturing sector as a possible career avenue, and to demonstrate how versatile and fascinating an industry it is. In the morning, students toured local manufacturers, including Urban Bloc, Scandic, ACCO Engineered Systems, FreeWire, and Vantage Robotics. Afterwards, students and members of the manufacturing community were invited to tour Chabot College’s manufacturing classrooms, enjoy lunch, and be inspired by presenters from Chabot College, Annabelle Candy Company, and Tesla.

It was a great month for appreciating manufacturers in the East Bay. If you missed it this year, put a note on your calendars for next year – National Manufacturing Day is always on the first Friday of October.
