Throughout the month of February, San Leandro is celebrating Black History Month. To recognize this month and foster reflection, learning and discussion, the San Leandro Library and San Leandro Historical Society are holding a number of events.

This Sunday, February 20th, at 2pm, join the San Leandro Historical Society at San Leandro High School for a performance of Brian Copeland’s Not a Genuine Black Man. This show tells Copeland’s story of growing up in San Leandro and how he claimed his identity in the place he now calls home. Described as a “brilliant one-man show that will have you laughing and crying”, the show has been the longest running solo show in San Francisco history. Tickets are still available! Visit here to learn more and purchase tickets.

To cap-off a month of events, including a Black History Read-In, teen evens, and a showing of the movie John Lewis: Good Trouble, the San Leandro Library is hosting a Black-Owned Business Discussion on Thursday, February 24, 2022, at 6:30PM. The event will feature a panel of local small business owners sharing their experience and unique offerings that they bring to our community. On March 19,

The City of San Leandro is committed to serve our diverse community and recognizes the importance of approaching its work in an equitable way. Increasing the community’s awareness of the challenges faced by Black-owned businesses during and before the pandemic and supporting the creation of opportunities for visibility and advocacy are important ways to expand an inclusive business ecosystem. San Leandro has a great diversity of Black-owned businesses that we work to support and celebrate throughout the year.

This is a virtual event – held via Zoom – and can be accessed via this Zoom link, or you can email the library to get signed up.

Essence of Flowers looks really wonderful, but it’s located in Oakland. (Sigh). Does the owner live in San Leandro? I’ve shared this on FB and I bet I get questions.
