With revenue increasing by 17% in 2012 and 20%  in 2013, the craft beer industry is undergoing a period of tremendous growth. Because craft beer only accounts for about 8% of beer sold in the U.S., the industry has plenty of room for continued growth in the future.

San Leandro has always been a great location for food and beverage production, offering flexible industrial real estate and easy access to the Bay Area’s transportation infrastructure. It’s no surprise that the craft beer industry is taking hold in San Leandro. This page provides an introduction to breweries, restaurants, suppliers and events that make up our Craft Beer Cluster.

Breweries

DrakesDrake’s Brewing (1933 Davis St) – Founded in 1989, Drake’s is one of the leaders of the craft beer movement and a major source of pride for the San Leandro community. Drake’s has been expanding in recent years and recently opened the Drake’s Barrel House, a tasting room with 24 beers on tap, a retail store, and the nicest patio you’ll ever find tucked behind a Wal-Mart.

21st-Amendment-logo21st Amendment Brewery (2010 Williams St) – 21A opened its 95,000 sq. ft. production brewery in August 2015 and is one of the largest breweries in northern California. The initial build-out will include a tasting room, and 21A has plans to open a full-service restaurant on-site in the coming years.

Cleophus Quealy (448 Hester St) – Like many breweries, Cleophus Quealy owes its humble beginnings to two beer lovers in a suburban garage. Today, the Cleophus Quealy brewers are on a mission to help people see beer in a whole new light: nourishment for our lives, our palates, and our communities. Cleophus Quealy will open later this year.

Bars and Restaurants Specializing in Craft Beer

Just a fraction of the beers available on tap at the Englander.

The Cooler (1517 E. 14th St) – this new addition to Downtown San Leandro is a dedicated craft beer taproom, whose beer list is updated frequently to keep craft beer aficionados coming back for new adventures. The list is comprised from local craft breweries, reaching no farther than Sacramento, CA, but of course also including selections from our San Leandro brewers. The Cooler does not serve food, but patrons are strongly encouraged to bring in food from neighboring restaurants.

The Englander (101 Parrott St) – is well known as one of the best places to watch sports (including EVERY game of the 2014 World Cup!), but this San Leandro classic is also a phenomenal place for craft beer, with dozens of beers available on draught. With great food and abundant outdoor seating, The Englander is a hub of activity in Downtown San Leandro.

The tap list at Harry's HofbrauHarry’s Hofbrau (14900 East 14th St) – A longtime San Leandro institution, Harry’s Hofbrau recently overhauled its bar area and now features an impressive collection of carefully curated craft beers. The bar at Harry’s has become a great place to discover new beers and chat with other beer enthusiasts.

Porky’s Pizza Palace (1221 Manor Blvd) – Porky’s began serving Drake’s beers on the first day they were available in 1989 and they have remained at the forefront of the craft beer revolution ever since. As an added bonus, you can catch the All-Star Banjo Band at Porky’s every Thursday evening.

Brewing Suppliers

brewmasterBrewMaster (2315 Verna Ct) – Located in San Leandro’s industrial area, BrewMaster is a leading wholesaler of brewing and winemaking equipment and supplies. BrewMaster also has a retail store where home-brewers can get supplies and advice.

Brewer’s Supply Group (750 139th Ave) – BSG is a national, industry leader, providing the hops, malt, yeast, and other ingredients needed by the craft beer industry. Their San Leandro facility  is one of the largest suppliers in the region, serving breweries throughout the Bay Area.

williams brewingWilliam’s Brewing (2088 Burroughs Ave) – Most craft breweries grow out of home-brewing operations, and William’s Brewing is the ultimate resource for home brewers (not to mention amateur winemakers and coffee roasters). In San Leandro since 1979, William’s Brewing has everything you need to get started on a new beer hobby.

Craft Beer Events

First Fridays – On the first Friday of each month, Drake’s throws a patio party to support local non-profits and schools. These events feature great beers and a rotating selection of food trucks.

Pint Nights – Every Thursday, starting at 6pm, Harry’s Hofbrau hold a Pint Night, featuring a different brewery each week, often with appearance by the brewers themselves. This is a great opportunity to discover rare and hard-to-find beers (and enjoy a seat on the patio on warm nights).

Sausage and Suds – On the first Sunday of October, Downtown San Leandro holds a grand celebration of San Leandro’s legacy as a producer of sausages and beer. The event attracts over 8,000 people each year and features a great roster of live music and fun attractions for people of all ages.
