Get Ready for More Utility Box Art!
The City is pleased to announce that a third round of mural installations on utility boxes has begun! Following two successful phases of installations of mural art on 41 utility boxes, San Leandrans will see art arriving on 29 additional boxes in 21 locations throughout the city. When this phase is completed, San Leandro will be home to a total of 68 utility boxes with artwork installed.
Last week, artist Brett Flanigan hand-painted utility boxes located at Washington Avenue and San Leandro Boulevard (pictured above). This past weekend, Ernest Doty painted a box on Alvarado Street at Teagarden Street (pictured right), Fernanda Martinez is currently underway on a box at Stenzel Park (pictured below), and this coming weekend, Brie Noel will enhance the box located at Wicks and Manor Boulevards. Hand painting on 25 City-owned utility boxes will occur over the next several weeks, with the remaining four boxes set to receive polymer wraps installed in the coming months. The remaining wraps from the second round of utility box art will also be installed in the next month or two.
This effort is a collaboration between the City of San Leandro and Athen B. Gallery. If you wish to learn how you can sponsor art on a utility box in San Leandro, please contact Lars Halle, Development Coordinator, at 510-577-3311 or lhalle@sanleandro.org.
