At 6:30PM on June 22, 2022, the City of San Leandro Arts Commission will be holding its monthly meeting in the Surlene Grant Community Room at 999 E. 14th Street. On the agenda for this meeting is a project update on the final installment of the mural art project, as well as a meet-and-greet with the artist Mike “Bam” Tyau. The public is invited to attend and share their San Leandro stories to provide inspiration for the mural design.

In 2016, the City embarked on a project to install a series of murals on private property throughout the City. Over the next several years, murals were installed at 14999 Farnsworth Street, 1800 Merced Street, 1605 Abram Court (on the freeway side), and at 15000 Farnsworth Street.

A fifth mural was also planned for the substation building at the Downtown San Leandro BART station. At that time, the building was scheduled to undergo significant renovation, so the project was delayed until the completion of this maintenance. In 2019, a call for artists was issued to recruit a strong artist for this location. For more information and a documentary video about the mural project, follow this link.

With work complete at the BART station, the time has now come to complete this mural project, and the artist that was selected from the 2019 Call for Artists, Mike “Bam!” Tyau, will work on a suitable design with hopes to install the mural in July. We invite the public to provide insightful tidbits on what is special about San Leandro for the artist to draw inspiration.

Tyau has extensive experience as a muralist and painter, and serves on the faculties of Design Tech High School, Precita Eyes Muralists, and the Estria Foundation Mele Murals program.

Have him paint a cool version of the marquee of the Historic BAL Theatre it’s the right colors

  2. Tony says:

Please paint a beautiful, nature themed scene, showcasing some of San Leandro’s coastal attributes. Birds, Seagulls, Monarch butterflies, the rocky coastline, etc. Please, NO graffiti styled graphics. We have enough actual graffiti to deal with. We need a break from it. Thank you!
