A new video has been released, highlighting the many great events happening each year in Downtown San Leandro.  With film and photos taken over the course of a year, the video captures the many people who enjoy community, diversity, food and fun in Downtown San Leandro.

Each year, Downtown San Leandro is host to many family-friendly and community-oriented events, such as the historic Cherry Festival, the Downtown Farmers Market, Truth Thursdays, Sausage & Suds Music Festival, and It’s a Wonderful Night. These events are made possible thanks to the hard work and collaboration of local business and community groups and the City of San Leandro, including the Downtown Association, the Chamber of Commerce, the San Leandro Improvement Association (SLIA).

On an annual basis, Downtown San Leandro events bring together impressive numbers of people. The Farmers Market typically sees over 2,000 visitors per week, Sausage & Suds and It’s a Wonderful Night also bring thousands of locals, and the Cherry Festival amasses between 35,000 and 45,000 festival-goers each year. These events have served as staples for the San Leandro community for many years, enticing residents and visitors to check out all that Downtown San Leandro has to offer.

Anyone who has spent time in San Leandro over the past several years can attest that the Downtown area is much different today than it was ten years ago. In recent years, Downtown San Leandro has seen the arrival of an impressive number of new restaurants, exciting new businesses, public art, and free WiFi.

Perhaps most effective have been the many new food establishments that have been popping up all over the Downtown area. Over the past several years, San Leandrans have witnessed the arrival of Kendejah, Maejoo, and Atelier Colibri Patisserie in Pelton Plaza. On East 14th Street, Shabu House, Xiao Long Bao, Full House Cafe, Sweethoney Dessert, Leisure Cafe, T4, Peet’s Coffee, Habit Burger, and Chipotle have been added to the many staple restaurants. In Washington Plaza, Bonchon, Dynasty Pot, and Sons of Liberty Alehouse have begun to build strong customer bases. Beer lovers have also embraced local craft beer taproom the Cooler, which encourages customers to bring their dinner from local restaurants while they enjoy a selection from the ever-changing tap menu. And across from BART on San Leandro Boulevard, Cafe Liano has taken over the former California Signs space, offering their own coffee roasts and various goodies.

Retail and office space has also begun to see a change in the Downtown area. A few years back, Anytime Fitness opened in Washington Plaza, and creative co-working space Station SL opened last year, providing an opportunity for remote employees to work in a comfortable and inspirational environment. Two barber shops have opened: Goodfellas Barbershop on Parrott Street, and Prime Legacy Barbershop in Joaquin Plaza. At the recently developed “Village”, AT&T and CVS have opened brand new spaces.

Several businesses have taken the initiative to spruce up their facades by engaging in the City’s Commercial Rehabilitation Program. East Bay Flowers, Parrott Plaza (The Englander, the Vine, Allphin Jewelers, etc.), Turner Eye Institute, Atelier Colibri Patisserie, and Sons of Liberty Alehouse all have worked on improving the exterior of their businesses.

Vibrant and engaging new public art has also been added to the streetscape, with the Great Migration of the Monarch Butterfly mural on San Leandro Boulevard, Truth is Beauty at the San Leandro Tech Campus, the Chime Way in Joaquin Plaza, the Spacetime from a Breath of Air mural at E. 14th Street and West Juana Avenue, and mosaics on planters, not to mention the many utility boxes that have been adorned with beautiful art by area artists. Some of this art is thanks to local developments, such as the San Leandro Tech Campus, and the Village, as well as the San Leandro Improvement Association, and more art can be expected in coming years.

Downtown San Leandro is transforming into a newer, busier, and more exciting version of itself.  Over the coming years, proposed developments and the coming of more new restaurants and retail spaces will continue to bring more amenities and culture to the area.  Stay tuned, there is much yet to come in Downtown San Leandro!
