Out of the Box logoSan Leandro by Design: Out of the Box! Innovation Community Roundup will take place this Wednesday evening on the Roof of the Bayfair Center.  This is the second event this month under the San Leandro by Design brand.   The Bayfair event is focused on gathering together San Leandro’s amazing wealth of established business innovators to help create the business network and explore groundbreaking ideas that will launch San Leandro as the next great business, technology, and innovation center in the nation.

The theme of this event will be Big Data, Speed, and the Renaissance of American Manufacturing, and will feature San Leandro’s own Patrick Kennedy of OSIsoft as our special guest.

We’re encouraging the participants to “Bring along your wildest ideas, your favorite collaborators, and an appetite for great food and drinks. Experience the innovation showcase on the rooftop and discover for yourself new ways to create opportunities in San Leandro’s commercial districts.”  The innovation showcase promises to be exciting, featuring some of San Leandro established giants along with some surprising newcomers and special guests!

This event is being developed through a unique collaboration that includes the City of San Leandro, the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce, UIX Global, and Madison Marquette/Bayfair Center.

The Story Behind this Event

San Leandro doesn’t have to go far to find its own community of innovators.

As the Next Generation Workplace District study revealed, San Leandro has a rich array of industrial businesses that continue to manufacture and create jobs. To survive and prosper in the wake of decades of manufacturing job losses throughout the United States, all of these San Leandro companies have found innovative ways to thrive and grow.

The study identified four significant manufacturing clusters in San Leandro (click onto map for details):

San Leandro Industry Clusters and Businesses

Food: Aidell’s Sausage, Bay Cities Produce, Coca Cola, Drake’s Brewing, Ghiradelli, Otis Spunkmeyer, Pavel’s Yogurt, Santos Spices and many more.

Instruments and Control: Energy Recovery Inc., G4S Technology, American Underwater Products (Oceanic Worldwide); PhaseSpace, Production Robotics, etc.

Metals and Machining: ACCO Engineered Systems, Applied Fusion, Halus Power Systems, Koffler Electrical, Olson Steel, Scandic Springs, etc.

Other Innovators: Alameda Applied Science, Atomic Productions, iHear Medical, INX Digital, L-3 Applied Technologies, Sunlink, Somerset Studios, etc.

San Leandro will continue to expand its place in the East Bay as a Maker job-creating economy by creating a sustainable ecosystem that benefits these companies, expanding their business-to-business opportunities and their local supply chains.  This ecosystem includes existing businesses, new businesses and entrepreneurs, their business supply chains, business support services (including access to capital), our City and its partners.

San Leandro is perfectly positioned to take advantage of the rapidly approaching renaissance in American manufacturing.  Powered by industrial-capacity electricity, water, gas, state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant, and 10 gigabit fiber optic network;  strategically located between San Francisco and Silicon Valley; several dense development projects entitled or in process that are designed to take advantage of the City’s award-winning transit oriented development plan; excellent access to transportation, including 2 BART stations; and a City Council and Staff that is increasingly nimble and creative — San Leandro is poised to take a leadership role in this nation’s manufacturing renaissance.
