Station SL – the first official coworking space in Downtown San Leandro – is opening on Tuesday, May 1st.  Station SL will be located at 1455 Hays Street, merely two blocks from the Downtown San Leandro BART Station.  Station SL will share a building with Shannon-Leigh Associatesa local environmental graphic design firm.  Owner Shannon Hackley purchased the former Roberts Awards “Trophy Shop” building and has made a significant investment to renovate the mid-century building into a bright and modern space.

In 2009, Shannon Hackley started her environmental graphic design firm in San Leandro.  The business was able to grow with the benefit of low rents at the Gate510, San Leandro’s tech and arts focused business space above the Westgate Shopping Center, and was looking to expand.  A San Leandro resident, Hackley wanted to keep her business local, and was excited to find the space at 1455 Hays Street.  Shannon had a bigger vision than making a home for her growing design firm and set out to open a coworking space.

“We want to create a truly collaborative design space here in the East Bay. There is opportunity to work with business, architects and developers revitalizing San Leandro.  This is a great space and we can’t wait to see how the community helps us develop it into the coolest place to work in San Leandro.” — Shannon Hackley

Coworking is a style of work that involves a shared workplace — often an office — and independent activity. Unlike in a typical office, those coworking are usually not employed by the same organization.  Coworking is a social gathering of a group of people who are still working independently, but who share values and are interested in the synergy that can happen from working alongside people who value working in the same place. This type of environment offers a solution to the problem of isolation that many freelancers experience while working at home, while at the same time allowing an escape from its distractions.

Shannon-Leigh Associates is a certified woman-owned, environmental graphic design firm specializing in designing signage programs for educational, corporate, residential, civic, and healthcare markets.  The business utilizes design thinking and targeted implementation to improve a person’s journey and experience within a built environment, create branded environments, and design signage programs that feature intuitive and mindful wayfinding. For more information about the work that Shannon-Leigh does, contact them at 510-969-7870 or shannonleigh.design.

The Station SL grand opening takes place on Tuesday, May 1st, with Open House tours offered between 12 PM and 5 PM, when people can try out the space for free. The space offers wi-fi, coworking hot seats, private suites, and meeting rooms.  A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, May 23, from 5:30 PM until 7:30 PM. Contact Station SL at 510-679-1651 or hello@stationsl.com for more information.

based on those pics, the inside looks like a great environment! I just hope they can do the same for the outside…not a very attractive exterior.
