Residents have probably noticed that work is going on at the site of the former Carrow’s Restaurant at 15011 Hesperian Boulevard  So, what is arriving?

mels-dinerThe former Carrow’s is transforming into an Original Mel’s Dineran iconic American staple since 1947, which many may recognize from the 1973 George Lucas film American Graffiti.  Mel’s menu is extensive and made up of American diner-fare, including all-day breakfast, 24 hamburger varieties, as well as a multitude of shakes, malts, and sundaes. Mel’s expects to open for business by the end of the year and will host a job fair at the San Leandro location from November 16th until November 20th.

With some assistance from the City’s business incentive programs, Original Mel’s Diner is investing $450,000 in remodeling and improving the restaurant, with significant changes to the exterior, new roofing, as well as improvements to the sidewalk and curb ramps.  The arrival of such an iconic and recognizable business goes to show that San Leandro continues to be an attractive City in which for good businesses to invest.

San Leandro neighbors, do we need another restaurant like this? There’s nothing here good for your health or waistline. And why does a chain like Mel’s deserve our business incentive dollars? All we’ll get in return is fat and sick. I hope Mel’s goes the way of Carrows and the nearby Arby’s on E. 14th – out of business.

Typical liberal that wants government to make the right or wrong decisions for everyone. There is a market demand for Mel’s Diner in our area and we should welcome them as a new business partner to SL.

Since there is no Lyon’s Carrow’s etc, and bringing it back an atmosphere of the 50’s is a positive thing. It is not a political statement it is a choice, plus, I will be working there. My name is Gina. So when you come in Jeff, be sure and say hi. A little cup of coffee can’t hurt ya! ( There are big screen TV’s for sporting events and a juke box at ever table that lets you pick your tunes that play thru out the restaraunt- live a little

really, get a salad!!! Yes, we need a restaurant

Absolutely we need this. First of all this compares no where near a carrows. San leandro needs more popular restaurants. We have nothing in this city inviting. I can’t wait to see it open. Come mels you will be one of the most popular places ever. And your return will be great. Who cares of competition says. And if u get fat eating there it is because your already are. No one forced you to put that burger in your mouth…yes mels can’t wait..

I care about this city. So I am glad to see Mels fixing the place up and moving in – there are too many vacant lots rotting out near our downtown. We need the business.

Sure – healthy is always good luckily I counted six salads on their menu. If you are worried about weight – get a salad. I’ll get a burger and then hit the gym. Health aside, Mel’s has style and it is so much better than another fast food joint.

Generally, I prefer not using government funds to assist business. But if that is what we have to do to attract business, then I applaud the local government for doing it. Look at the empty lots across the street from Mels, or the grocery store carts and trash piles a block up 150th. Assisting business startups is probably cheaper in the long run than cleaning up a slum if we don’t have businesses. Kudos to our local government for helped set this up. Please do the same thing across the street.

I was pleasantly pleased to see the new Mel’s when I stopped at the light yesterday. I’ve lived in San Leandro for 45 years and seen businesses come and go. I have never seen this much vacancy, blight and trash. I am enthused that we are getting the restaurant. It is close to me and I drive by that vacant triangle area every day. I don’t plan to leave here so an uptrend on incoming businesses is a good thing and there is nothing wrong with Mel’s!

As for those who don’t like the food, atmosphere etc., just eat somewhere else.

Positivity!! Positivity!! Positivity!! Just keep thinking that and have a great day!
