Work Begins on Siempre Verde Park Rehabilitation
On October 26, 2015, the San Leandro City Council joined members of the community in celebrating the groundbreaking for the rehabilitation of Siempre Verde Park on San Leandro Boulevard. The process began in 2010, with the creation of a plan that was guided by residents, students and other community members. Their design will include new play structures, picnic tables, barbecues, restrooms, basketball courts, exercise stations, and a space for tai chi. The project also includes and a smaller, more drought-friendly field with an irrigation system drawn from a new subsurface well. A pedestrian pathway will encircle the main lawn area.
Local and State funding sources were leveraged to make the $3.6 million park renovation a reality, including nearly $900,000 from the California Department of Housing and Community Development, over $1.5 million in park development fees, and over $1.1 million from the City’s General Fund, which was made possible thanks to Measure HH. Siempre Verde Park will remain closed throughout the duration of the project, which is estimated to be completed in the summer of 2016.
