On Tuesday, September 13, 2022, Books Inc. – the oldest independent bookseller in the West – opened its door to the San Leandro community. Books Inc. has moved its corporate and distribution headquarters to San Leandro and is also opening a retail store in its new location at 2483 Washington Avenue.

Opening day featured raffles, tasty treats, and lots of great books to enlighten, inspire, and entertain. The store features all new books (no used books), discounted books, gifts, games, puzzles, and more!

Tracing its history back to 1851, Books Inc. is the oldest independent bookseller in the West, and continues to operate as such in ten Bay Area locations. The business employs 200 workers across these locations, with 20 employees dedicated to the new San Leandro location.

The 2,800 square foot San Leandro store will employ six staff and a manager, and the 15,000 square foot warehouse will employ the rest.

With a history of over 170 years, Books Inc. knows the literary business and many of its knowledgeable staff have decades of experience, which is a telling indicator of its success during times when book stores have typically been shuttering its doors.

“Since moving our headquarters from San Francisco in October of last year, our team has enjoyed getting to know San Leandro. The community has been so welcoming and we can’t wait to provide an exceptional book-buying experience in our robust, new store!”

Andy Pelham – CEO, Books, Inc.

Stop by the Washington Avenue store and welcome this new addition to the San Leandro community! The store will be open every day from 10AM until 5PM. The store is also hiring several positions and would love to tap into the San Leandro workforce.
