The City of San Leandro has released a Call for Artists for two new public murals, including one in Downtown San Leandro.  The City Council approved the funding of the murals as a part of the Beautify San Leandro initiative. The City’s consultant, ABG Art Group, will be accepting portfolio applications from Greater San Francisco Bay Area mural artists through May 15, 2024.

These murals follow a series of murals, utility box wraps and other public art coordinated by the City of San Leandro since 2014. There are also a number of privately funded murals throughout the City. By installing public art throughout San Leandro, we create a platform for storytelling and communication, transforming unattractive, obtrusive spaces into vibrant art pieces and a topic of interest for the community. Artists are asked to submit portfolios of examples of existing work. 3-5 examples of past work will be accepted. Portfolios will be used to select artists for commission. Artists selected to receive a commission, will receive a new timeline determined related to the approval and installation process. Selected artists will be asked to submit a design for a mural concept. Concept and design must be new and original. Prior works or design ideas will not be considered for this project.

Selected artists will be notified within 8 weeks of the submission due date. Acceptance into the finalist round does not guarantee a commission. Artists should complete this application form and submit required information.
