Eden Housing to Build 62-Units of Affordable Housing Next to San Leandro BART
Eden Housing, an organization that specializes in affordable housing for families, seniors, and people with disabilities, has been approved to build a new 62-unit housing project next to the San Leandro BART Station. Located at the southeast corner of Parrott Street and San Leandro Blvd (1604 San Leandro Blvd), the Parrott Street Apartments project represents the second affordable housing project in Downtown San Leandro in recent years.
Eden Housing has worked to provide housing in the East Bay for over 50 years, and manages 376 units in six locations in San Leandro, including Estabrook Place (2103 E. 14th Street), Fuller Gardens (2390 E. 14th Street), Fuller Lodge (2141 Bancroft Avenue), Eden Lodge (400 Springlake Drive), Las Palmas and The Surf (15370 Tropic Court).
The development will consist of a 5-story building with 22 studio apartments, 22 one-bedroom units, and 18 two-bedroom units. Amenities for residents will include an outdoor courtyard, a community room for residents, vegetable planters, and a computer room.
This project is helping to fulfill San Leandro’s Regional Housing Need Allocation for 2015-2022 that identifies the need for at least 823 new very low- and low-income units in the coming years. As has been seen in Bridge Housing‘s development of affordable housing along San Leandro Boulevard, there is great demand for affordable housing in the area. The 115 affordable housing units at Marea Alta received over 10,500 applications and the 85 senior housing units at La Vereda received over 2,200 applications.
Additionally, this development is in keeping with the goals of the City’s Downtown Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Strategy, which encourages increased investment in Downtown San Leandro, including development of a mix of uses, including affordable housing, within the vicinity of the BART station.
