Maejoo Korean Cuisine has opened its doors in Downtown San Leandro. Located in Pelton Plaza, this small restaurant offers authentic and affordable Korean food and is already causing a buzz on Yelp.

Open for lunch and dinner, Maejoo features a focused menu of appetizers, ramen & noodles, bibimbap, barbecue, and tofu soups. Aside from the barbecue section, all categories also offer vegetarian options. There are plenty of mouthwatering dishes on the menu, including the fried gyoza (offered as standalone dumplings, or as a salad), the kimchi pancake, and the crispy and savory Korean fried chicken. Noodle-lovers can rejoice in three versions of spicy ramen, or the popular japchae glass noodles.

If you like bibimbap, you will be pleased that Maejoo serves both the hot stone version (dolsot) as well as the traditional rice bowl. The bibimbap comes with a choice of beef, pork, chicken, seafood or tofu. The heartiest part of the menu is the barbecue category, which presents a generous line-up of short ribs, rib eye, spicy pork, chicken, and spicy chicken, each served with rice and side dishes. A flavorful soft tofu soup rounds off the menu, with options of beef, pork, seafood, or a beef and seafood combo, as well vegetarian options of kimchi or mushroom.

The newly renovated space is comfortable and modern-looking, with individual and communal tables. Take-out is also available for those on the go. San Leandro is enjoying a renaissance of eateries lately, so please stop by and welcome Maejoo to Downtown San Leandro!

The bibimbap (stone pot version, of course) tastes amazing! It has the perfect amount of smokiness, and the rice is nice and crispy. The tofu stew is lighter and less salty than most places, which can be good because it seems healthier than other places, but not good if you are expecting a more salty and flavorful dish. Will definitely come back to try the bbq plate.

Loving all these new restaurants in the area! Maejoo will have some competition soon when the korean wings place opens up next to the downtown McDonalds.
