“NO, YOU’RE NOT TRIPPING. IT’S THE LIGHTS” – San Leandro/UC Berkeley Featured in SF Magazine’s Smart City Awards

  In December 2014, the City of San Leandro was treated to an experimental collaboration with U.C. Berkeley Professor Greg Niemeyer/Director of the Center for New Media and Asst. Professor Ronald Rael/Architecture.  These professors led a collaboration of students from various departments throughout the University to create three separate, temporary light/sensor installations in locations throughout San Leandro.  These installations were designed to test whether unique and playful lights installed in areas lightly traveled by nighttime pedestrians could increase pedestrian traffic. The project was sponsored (and paid for) by Global Urban Humanities Initiative , a joint venture between the UC Berkeley Arts & Humanities Division of the College of Letters and Sciences and the College of Environmental Design.

The success of these three temporary projects have merged into a single more permanent project to be installed at the top of the Casa Peralta walls adjoining Carpentier and W. Estudillo Streets.  Professor Neimeyer and San Leandro resident/UC Berkeley graduate Pablo Paredes’ light installation at Casa Peralta recently caught the attention of San Francisco Magazine’s staff who were preparing for its “The Smart City Awards” June edition.  The article is featured at left.
